The Heidi Marx Prize
The Heidi Marx Prize
For outstanding contribution in the field of medicine, health, and healing in the ancient Mediterranean

Dr. Heidi Marx has carved new paths in the study of ancient Mediterranean philosophy, medicine, botany, and religion. Dr. Marx’s work is recognizable in its clarity, intellectual insight, and generous engagement with other scholars’ work, combining immense learning with critical collegiality. In 2013, Dr. Marx, with Dr. Kristi Upson-Saia, founded the international working group ReMeDHe: Religion, Medicine, Disability, and Health in Late Antiquity, to support innovative and rigorous scholarship in the field. Under their leadership, ReMeDHe has grown to include hundreds of scholars across the globe, and has sponsored numerous workshops, panels, conferences, and publications.

In recognition of Dr. Marx’s ongoing scholarly contributions, ReMeDHe is pleased to launch the Heidi Marx Prize, to be awarded annually for the best article on medicine, health, and healing in the ancient Mediterranean.
Nominations and Eligibility
To nominate an article, email a PDF of the article, together with a short (100-200 words) explanation of why this essay excels in terms of the selection criteria below to ReMeDHe’s co-Directors: Kristi Upson-Saia (upsonsaia@oxy.edu) and Jonathan Zecher (Jonathan.Zecher@acu.edu.au).

Nominated articles may have been published any time within the last three (3) years, but must have appeared in print or online by the time the prize is awarded (see the timeline below).

Nominations and self-nominations are welcome. Authors with any affiliation and any rank, and articles from any scholarly journal, may be nominated. We especially encourage nominations of articles authored by early-career scholars and scholars from communities or identities that have been historically underrepresented in the field.
Selection Criteria
Nominated articles will be reviewed by the Prize Committee (a subcommittee of the ReMeDHe Board) based on the following criteria, which reflect the character of Dr. Marx’s own career and legacy:
-
Contribution to the field: How is this article enriching the scholarly conversation?
-
Engagement with ancient sources: How deeply does this article dive deeper into historical evidence?
-
Engagement with contemporary scholarship: How does this article engage existing scholarship? How does this article balance critical new insights and scholarly generosity?
-
Quality of the argument and the prose: Is this article a joy to read?

The winner of the Heidi Marx Prize will receive $250 toward books of their choosing, as well as recognition on the ReMeDHe website and publicity via ReMeDHe’s social media.
